My laptop won't start?

My laptop has been really slow lately, and I got frustrated and I have to admit that I hit it to get it to work again. It seemed to be doing fine and then I had to restart it. It froze on the starting windows screen, and every time i pressed a key it would beep. I have taken out the batteries and recharged multiple times. What the hell is happening?
